Family Health Unit

Due to the fetal and neonatal period, women's health is closely linked to the desire to have children, and adolescents. In order to promote, maintain and restore their health, it is important to accompany the family as a whole. For this there is the Family Health Unit at Eridanus Hospital.
Special clinical priorities are the care of fetuses with congenital heart defects, urinary drainage disorders and complicated multiple pregnancies. There is an optimal network with the adjoining fields of obstetrics, human genetics, neonatology, pediatric osteology, pediatric surgery, pediatric cardiology and pediatric nephrology. This enables us to advise and treat couples with the most complex prenatal medical issues and to ensure a smooth postnatal course.

Pediatric surgery

The focus on pediatric surgery is a highly specialized surgical specialty at Eridanus Hospital. It treats children from newborns up to the age of 14, with a special focus on the surgical care of extremely premature babies and the therapy of congenital malformations.
The increasingly highly specialized and complex care of child patients nowadays requires close cooperation between appropriate specialists from a wide range of specialist areas.

Pediatric cardiology

The Pediatric Cardiology Unit provides children with cardiovascular problems of all ages: from newborns to young adults. Most patients have a congenital heart defect. The clinic works closely with the Gynecology and Obstetrics Unit for advice before birth, if a congenital heart defect is suspected. Pediatric cardiology ensures the best possible cooperation with pediatric cardiac surgery. Together with cardiac surgery for children, all forms of congenital and acquired cardiac defects in childhood are treated surgically or interventionally. Specialties in pediatric cardiology are so-called univentricular heart defects, such as hypoplastic left heart syndrome, tricuspid atresia or pulmonary atresia. Heart problems of the newborn age are also typical tasks. Specialists with an excellent international reputation work in the pediatric team for the treatment of arrhythmias in children and adolescents.

Robot-assisted minimally invasive surgery

Robotic surgery is a further development of the laparoscopy, which has been established in visceral surgery in the past years. The surgeon introduces a camera and special instruments into the abdominal or chest cavity via small skin incisions in order to be able to operate in a minimally invasive manner.

Research

The ERIDANUS HOSPITAL HOLDING LTD offers a variety of interdisciplinary, future-oriented research fields. Due to intensive cooperation with other universities and colleges, with non-university research institutions and with companies from the health sector, the ERIDANUS HOSPITAL HOLDING LTD offer attractive jobs for young scientists. Scientific collaborations promote knowledge transfer and guarantee competitive research at a high level, both nationally and internationally.

At the ERIDANUS HOSPITAL HOLDING LTD, national and international scientists conduct research in different clinics, institutes and units. They span the entire spectrum from molecular medicine to cell culture and animal models to translational research and clinical application.

In order to successfully transfer the knowledge gained from basic research into clinical application, physicians and scientists pool their knowledge and resources. The ERIDANUS HOSPITAL HOLDING LTD work intensively on different levels in the direction of the individual research areas, thereby taking into account the further development of medical research. They ensure that sufficient resources are available for clinical studies and the establishment of biobanks. The general focus of the research areas and their progress are regularly evaluated by an external scientific advisory board.

Clinical trials are an important tool for medical advancement. The effectiveness, tolerability and safety of new and already approved medicines, medical devices, new therapies and forms of treatment or medical interventions are checked here. Clinical research is helping to develop new drugs and forms of therapy that can later be used to treat diseases more effectively and with fewer side effects.

Basic research aims to decode relationships between structures and processes as completely as possible and to uncover the underlying mechanisms. Here, questions are systematically examined that are not directly related to the application or are aimed directly at a therapeutic application, but rather form the basis for further examinations and should lead to the solution of practical problems. Basic research creates the conditions for all subsequent application-oriented developments and technical innovations. Translational research, i.e. the quick and efficient implementation of preclinical research in clinical development and application, deals with the further, targeted basic research at the border to applied research.

Plasmapheresis Unit

Plasmapheresis is an extracorporeal procedure which means it is a procedure that occurs outside of the body in which the blood plasma is extracted from the blood stream and is exchanged or treated and is then returned back to the blood circulation. It is quite a broad term that includes a variety of procedures in which blood is extracted from the body, only to return back to it.

If you’re sick, your plasma can contain antibodies that attack the immune system. A machine can be used to remove the affected plasma and replace it with good plasma or a plasma substitute. This is also known as plasma exchange. The process is similar to kidney dialysis.

Plasmapheresis also can refer to the plasma donation process, where the plasma is removed and the blood cells are returned to your body.

Plasmapheresis can be used to treat a variety of Auto-immune Disorders including:
►Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis,
►Miller Fisher syndrome,
► Goodpasture’s syndrome,
►Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP)/hemolytic uremic syndrome,
►Granulomatosis with polyangiitis,
►Antiphospholipid antibody syndrome (APS or APLS),
►Microscopic polyangiitis,
►Recurrent focal and segmental glomerulosclerosis in the transplanted kidney and Hyperviscosity syndromes such as Cryoglobulinemia, Paraproteinemia, Waldenström macroglobulinemia etc.
►Myasthenia gravis
►Guillain-Barre syndrome
►Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy
►Lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrome
►Sickle cell anemia
►LYME DISEASE
►Alzheimer's disease
►Hyperviscosity syndromes

Genetic diagnostics

Rare diseases are not always, but about 80% attributable to a genetic cause. This can be a change in a single gene or genetic factors and external influences work together. In about 60% of genetically caused rare diseases, it is already known which genetic modification (s) are causing them. Depending on the suspected clinical diagnosis, one gene or several genes can then be examined as part of routine genetic diagnostics to ensure the diagnosis. A variety of tests are offered, for example, by the molecular genetic laboratory of the Human Genetics Unit at the Eridanus Hospital.

In the case of unclear diseases or diseases for which changes in many different genes can be the cause, the latest methods of so-called "Next Generation Sequencing" can also be used in routine diagnostics to uncover the disease-causing gene change. Either so-called gene panels (all genes that are assigned to a certain clinical picture, e.g. neuromuscular diseases, osteogenesis imperfecta, kidney diseases, mental retardation etc.), all currently known genes that were associated with monogenic genetic diseases (approx. 4800) (mendelioma ) examined all coding gene segments (the exome) or even the entirety of all 21,000 genes of a human being (the genome) at once. This makes it possible to identify previously unknown, causative gene changes within a few weeks or months.

We bring together the various efforts to diagnose rare diseases on a clinical and molecular genetic level. In the case of diseases for which no molecular genetic routine diagnostics are available, or in the case of previously unexplained diseases, we use the excellent research expertise available in the sub-centers as well as the diverse cooperation in national and international associations to develop innovative diagnostic strategies and in everyday clinical practice establish.

You can find out which options of routine genetic diagnostics or innovative special genetic diagnostics exist in the context of scientific studies for the individual diseases on the website of the respective sub-center.
